Step Outside & Let The Change Begin

You've seen it, you've heard it, you've ignored it and you've probably even half-attempted it at some point but let's face it, it's a bugger to crack and bloody exhausting to persevere with.
Curious?

Comfort Zones. They're far from comfortable, they no doubt will cause distress, anxiety and a serious case of drippy pits so where's the reward and achievement in pushing beyond what feels familiar and safe? Often when people murmur about pushing beyond comfort zones, their imagination springs to adrenaline inducing activities that are so whacky-backy to everyday life, there's little understanding to how this concept can revolutionise our daily existence. Of course lunging yourself out of an open plane door will push your limit buttons and cause your dear heart to scream but that little thump thump in your chest when you're introduced to a big potential work client or you have to re-route your daily morning commute are all activities that push you beyond what feels normal, safe and comfortable.

Whilst anxiety and discomfort are things we don't jump out of bed to pursue and experience on the daily, that surge in anxiety is surprisingly one of life's most beneficial assets. Why? Anxiety tests us, makes us question, challenges our perceptions and most importantly pushes us to move, improve and overcome.

"If You Always Do What You've Always Done Then You'll Always Get What You've Always Got."

As individuals we get complacent, sheltered and untroubled when we fall into rhythms, behaviours, patterns and routines that we find easy, habitual and recognisable. When something unbeknown and unexpected gets thrown into the pipeline, we hit the panic buttons and lose our ability to accustom and adapt. As such circumstances unsettles our "quiet easy lives" we then learn to avoid, retract and scurry back to what feels familiar and ok. Take a moment to ask yourself whether what you always do - day in, day out is leading you in the right direction. Are your behaviours making you happy, satisfied and living life to your full potential? Are you fulfilling your dreams and life visions?

Pushing beyond your safety zones will feel odd and scary but ultimately so does staying stuck in the same place of half-hearted living. We need the discomfort and unexpected in order to grow, to learn and test ourselves so that we can flourish and strengthen both our mental, physical and emotional existence. Staying within the confines of your comfort zones will eventually lead you to losing the hope and dreams of adventure and your glimmer for life will dull out of fear of trying something new. Forcing yourself to step outside the easy and tackling the unknown and unexplored opens up so much potential, so many opportunities and enables you to achieve things far greater than you could staying where you are.

Not everything will go to plan but that's the reward of stepping outside the safe and the familiar. That is what we call l-i-v-i-n-g. Essentially no-one is perfect; we're not meant to be. Our beauty as a nation resides in our flaws and imperfections and with risk comes the potential for failure. Yet with risk also comes the potential for great, miraculous triumphs. To give you some more food for thought and inspiration for taking the first step into pushing beyond your sheltered habits, let your mind mull and weigh up these brain musings...

Staying Cosy In Your Comfort Zones...
  • Security
  • Peace of mind
  • Short term fulfilment
  • Familiarity
  • Comfort

Taking A Risk And Stepping Outside....
  • Achieve your wider dreams and goals
  • Experience new things
  • Meet new people
  • Growth as an individual
  • Strengthens resilience
  • Long term fulfilment
  • Adaptability
  • Confidence

In truth the second list can go on and on and I bet if you're honest with yourself, a few extra benefits of pushing yourself beyond comfort sprung to mind. Which one sounds more exciting, happy, accomplished and carefree? I think the answer lies just beyond that line you drew on the ground right there...Step over it and the answer is yours!

I've recently met a truly beautiful lady who in just two short meetings has helped to open my eyes a little wider and question my perceptions of the world and the opportunities that lie beyond the life I have settled for. My goals and aspirations go beyond the daily existence I have become comfortable with and I hope that this poem she magically read to me resonates with the goals you hold yourself and shakes up your awareness of what it is that you strive for in life...

The Comfort Zone

by Anonymous

I used to have a comfort zone
where I knew I couldn't fail,
The same four walls of busy work
were really more like a jail

I longed so much to do the things
I'd never done before,
But I stayed inside my comfort zone
and paced the same old floor

I said it didn't matter
that I wasn't doing much,
I said I didn't care for things
like diamonds or furs and such

I claimed to be so busy
with the things inside my zone,
But deep inside I longed for
something special of my own

I couldn't let my life go by
just watching others win,
I held my breath and stepped outside
to let the change begin

I took a step and with new strength
I'd never felt before,
I kissed my comfort zone good bye
and closed and locked the door

If you are in a comfort zone
afraid to venture out,
Remember that all winners
were at one time filled with doubt

A step or two and words of praise
can make your dreams come true
Greet your future with a smile,
success is there for you!

Let perfection go. Raise the bar, quit making excuses out of fear and allow yourself to enjoy a journey of chance, growth and change.
Step outside your comfort zone and give yourself the chance for greatness. I double dare you.

Love, Sarah
