Champagne Supernova of The Moment: Theia

When it comes to music, the global industry is never short of a fresh spin of inspiring sounds and the chilling vibes of breakthrough kiwi solo artist, Theia is making electric waves in the ocean of music with her chilling vibes of talent.

With her new single 'Champagne Supernova' catching fire within the international charts with its heartfelt vocals, Theia looks ready to maximise the heat on her infectious deep-cut beats.

'Champagne Supernova' follows on from the top 5 radio hit (and NZ #1 airplay) 'Roam', which surpassed 3 million streams on Spotify in only 3 months and placed it on viral charts across the globe including the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia.

The title of the song comes from the book 'Champagne Supernovas' about the 90s renegades of fashion, namely Alexander McQueen, Isabella Blow, Marc Jacobs and Kate Moss.

Theia was drawn to the juxtaposition of the grandeur and glory; darkness and self-destruction – champagne being a symbol for elegance and supernova being a star that shines its brightest when it’s dying. The song is a way of dealing with inner turmoil or fighting your inner demons - whatever they may be.

I caught up with the girl of the moment herself to coax out the inspirations of the stripped back goddess behind the soulful voice of 2017. Any resistance is futile so strap yourselves in, prepare to be enchanted and turn up the alluring sounds of Theia...

Have you always been passionate about music and pursuing a career as a singer or did you have a sudden 'Uh hah!' moment?
I've written since about 7 years old, both poetry and songs and always lusted after a career in the arts, whether in movies, dance, broadway or as a music artist. Music was always going to happen, I believe. I just truly loved it so much and couldn't bare the thought of not pursuing it to the best of my ability.

What are the biggest inspirations behind your music?
I'm inspired by many things : fashion, life experiences, culture, music and art.

You're fast becoming a covetable musical 'it' idol, who are some of your biggest musical inspirations and why?
Amy Winehouse, Gaga and Rihanna are a few of my biggest inspirations. I could go on and on about my love for their fearlessness, strength, passion and style. Also I think there's a real strength in vulnerability, and being unabashedly yourself to the world. They're all truly inimitable and I really admire that.

You've got a very distinctive voice and vibe in your music. How would you describe your sound?
An eclectic mix of all my influences. Pop, electronic, dance, urban, R&B, with ethereal layered vocals, strong lyrics and melodies.

When you're not working, where and what would we find you doing?
Exploring, swimming at the beach, eating good food, in the pages of a good book and sharing laughs with family and friends.

What are you most excited about for the upcoming year?
There are so many exciting things ahead. I can't wait to release more music, to make more music, performing and traveling.

What would you say was your biggest life lesson to date?
Kindness.

What would be your parting piece of advice to young individuals feeling stuck or lost as to where to go in life?
Don't be scared to do what others aren't. Find what you really enjoy, what gives you fulfilment and pursue it. Focus on your strengths. Constantly make goals, write them down and work towards them.
